The College
of Natural and Applied Sciences Centennial Project, funded by the
SMSU Centennial Steering Committee, is a synergy between the departments
of Geography, Geology and Planning, Biology and Computer Science
at Southwest Missouri State University aimed at celebrating the
100 year anniversary of the university.
The mixed traditional
and technology driven approach of this project allow the user
multi-level access to geographic and scientific information. The
virtual arboretum can be used in combination with campus tree maps
and on-site tagged trees to enhance a visit to the SMSU campus.
Students, alumni and other visitors can enhance their experience
by learning about tree species identification and diversity. The
digital temporal map of the university can be used to interactively
explore, produce and print personalized 'time snapshot' maps of
the campus. In addition, information on gifts to the university including
location, year of donation and donor names can be explored and mapped.
The study was constrained to an area bordered by John Q. Hammons
Parkway on the west, National on the east, Madison on the north
and Grand on the south.
The project
has received support from:
- The 2004
Graduating Class who donated the tags for the 100
Centennial Trees, through the Senior Gift fund.
- The City
of Springfield, who allowed us to use the high resolution aerial
photography of the SMSU campus.
- SMSU Design
& Construction who helped with campus building dates and SMSU
Grounds Department for their assistance in validating the trees
maps.
Every effort
has been made to ensure that each tree, donation and building has
been identified correctly and that all associated information is
correct. However, as with any project, errors may have occurred.
Please report any you find to the Project Director.

by Virtual Arboretum: the alphabetized tree species links will take you
to most of the species found on the SMSU campus. Each tree species
is linked to a set of thumbnail photographs and a SMSU campus map showing the location of that
species. The 100
Centennial Trees have been commemorated with
a tag, and have been identified on all maps. |

by SMSU Gifts: mapped locations of many of the Gifts donated
to the campus. Whenever possible photographs of the gifts have
been included. |

by Historic Maps: witness, decade by decade, the SMSU campus
change from 1905 to present; all maps can be printed. |

Interactive Maps: Geographic Information System (GIS) based
map that can be changed interactively. Maps can be queried to
show different properties of the SMSU campus trees, buildings
and gifts. This digital temporal map can also be used to interactively
explore, produce and print personalized 'time snapshot' maps
of the campus. |
