The landscape in and around the Springfield metropolitan area has changed dramatically from 1972 to 2000. The acres of urban land increased from 36,996 acres in 1972 to 103,567 acres in 2000. Springfield experienced a 279.9% growth in urban land cover, the largest percentage for any land use class in the metropolitan area. Grassland was the primary land use converted to urban in the 28 years with a 40% loss. From 1972 to 2000 forested land cover slowly decreased in area.
