In July of 1993 John H. Keiser accepted the presidency of Southwest Missouri State University declaring that "It's a privilege to be a Bear!" During his tenure as President of the University he repeated that belief in every major speech. In 1997the University established a Bronze Bear Award to recognize alumni and friends who have made significant contributions to the institutions growth and development. Professor Jim Hill of the Art and Design Department created an 18-inch Bronze Bear that is presented to the recipients. In January of 1998, Dr. Keiser announced Dr. Hill would create a 14-foot replica of the Bronze Bear to be placed in the middle of campus in honor of all members of the SMSU community. William H. Darr, President of the SMSU Foundation, indicated that he and his wife, Virginia, wished to make a gift of the statue. The statue can be located on the northern entrance of Robert W. Plaster Student Union
