Lear about the geology of the Corner Stone from SMSU Geoscience Fact Sheet 2 ; the corner stone is Stop # 4 on the Field Guide to Geology of SMSU's Springfield Campus Tour.

     
The cornerstone is the last surviving fragment of the Springfield Normal and Business School. Its Buildings housed the state normal school from its first session in the summer of 1906 until January 1909, when the first building of Southwest Missouri State University was occupied. The stone was presented by Mr. & Mrs. Thomas O'Day Smith and placed on the campus to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the university. The cornerstone can be located in front of Carrington Hall.
