Leaf Arrangement and Shape:
Alternate with simple, non-lobed leaves
Fruit Type:
Samara (winged fruit)
Maximum Height:
70 feet

Flowers are red but small. The leaves are dark green and smooth on the top but are paler and somewhat rough or hairy on the bottom. Its vase-shaped crown once made this tree an ideal shade tree, but an Asian fungus (Dutch Elm disease) brought in around 1930 wiped out many populations and continues to threaten the species.
