China, Japan, non-native to United States
Leaf Arrangement and Shape:
Opposite with simple, heart-shaped leaves
Fruit Type:
Capsules (1/2-3/4 inch long)
Maximum Height:
65 feet

Leaves are often bronze in color when the tree is young and then will become green when the tree is older. Fall leaf colors are vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red. They also smell like burned sugar after they have fallen to the ground. The flowers are small and red.
